Owners of the Beowulf manuscript:
- Laurence Nowell dated the manuscript in 1563 with his name.
- Sir Robert Cotton owned the manuscript with several other famous documents: Lindisfarne Gospels and two copies of the Magna Carta.
- Sir Thomas Cotton - Son of Sir Robert
- Sir John Cotton - Grandson of Sir Robert Cotton, bequeathed the manuscript to the nation around 1702 at his death. It would become part of the Cotton Library and then the British Library.
